So you have the goal of visiting all fifty states. How do you complete it? We have been compiling the different strategies people have used to complete their journey. Stephen Von Worley wrote an interesting article "The Fifty, Swiftly. How Fast Could You Visit All 50 States?" on datapoint.com on August 7, 2012. He - using data, I'm assuming - came up with the fastest way to visit all 50 states. 6,813 miles to the 48 contiguous and a flights to Alaska and Hawaii. Total time: 160 hours. As you can see from the map you end up spending considerable time in some states - driving across South Dakota, but little time in other states - just the tip of California and Arizona. This method gets you to touch ground in every state. Now this is based on data - we don't know anyone who has actually taken this route yet! The Flanagan Family has been to all 50 states. And they have been to all fifty states. And they have been to all 50 states. They have visited all 50 states a remarkable 3 times! Their last trip was a mission to complete all 50 in the shortest amount of time possible. They did it in 8 days and 20 minutes. Another amazing traveler, Barry Stiefel visited all 50 states in a "week's vacation." His trip was round trip.
Now, some other 50-staters have taken a longer time to complete their journey - around one year.
On these trips the route looks much different as they are visiting many historical, sites of interest. The Martin Family also took a year long trip renting an RV traveling the states. This is roughly their trip.
If you are trying to visit all the main tourist locations in the United States, there is definitely no clear route to do it. In the year long trips the routes zig-zagged - through some states multiple times to see sites in different parts of the states.
We are working on another way to visit all 50 states -- in separate trips. 12 trips, 5 summers, etc. Also, seeing the USA states by train. All Fifty States in 7 Road Trips
