All Aboard! Traveling by train allows you see so much of our beautiful country. The train can take you through areas that you cannot go through by car and doesn't require any gas station stops! Get on and enjoy the ride! If you have rode on a train in each of the fifty states please let us know so we can add you to our Record Holders and offer you a free membership.

AMTRAK stops in 46 states

Planning a trip to all the states by train is quite the endeavor. Amtrak has stops in 46 states - but many of the trips originate out of main hubs in Chicago and northeast coast cities like New York and Washington D.C. Therefore visiting the 46 states in one trip would require some serious backtracking. Here are some trains that visit the most states. .

Crescent – New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama (only train to Alabama), Mississippi, Louisiana
13 states

Silver Service – New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania
10 states

Empire Builder – Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois
8 states

Vermonter – Washington D.C,. Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachussetts, Vermont (only train to Vermont)

Capitol Limited -(Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Washington D.C

Texas Eagle – Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas (only train to Arkansas), Texas. Connect to Heartland Flyer to go to Oklahoma - 5 states

Downeaster - Maine (only train to Maine), New Hampshire, Massachussetts, 3 states
Michigan Services - Chicago to Michigan
Hiwatha - Chicago to Wisconsin

What states can you NOt get to by train?

You may not be able to take a train TO these states, but once you are there you can certainly take some great train trips.

Wyoming

steam train ride is available once a year from Denver to Cheyenne as part of Cheyenne Frontier Days. According to an article by the Denver Post, tickets were $315 in 2013 round-trip but were so popular they are distributed through a lottery system. Occasionally one of the Amtrak routes is rerouted through Wyoming if the track it usually uses are closed for repair.

South Dakota

You may not be able to take a train TO South Dakota – but if you go the Black Hills area you can ride the 1880’s train which takes you on a 2 hour 15 minute ride through the Black Hills.

HAWAII

Hawaii – Once you get to Hawaii you can ride with the Hawaiian Railroad Society in Ewa Beach. The 90 minute narrated tour takes you along the beach and historical areas and might teach you a thing or two about sugar cane production on the island.

Alaska

One of our Travel Goal Getter Member favorites is Denali National Park. Many take the train between Anchorage and Fairbanks to get there. The train between Anchorage and Seward also has gotten great reviews.
