Travel the World on $50 a Day contains information similar to what can be found on his website or in his e-mail blasts, but the book provides an enjoyable, easy-to-read, reference format. The book steps through helpful information for the early stages of planning a trip then delves into how to make specific arrangements on an overall basis then by regions of the world. On his book tour he stressed that $50 a day is an average - so some parts of the world you can travel to much cheaper and others it will likely be more. While his advice applies to many different types of travelers, it is a must-have resource for those considering a long overseas adventure such as an around-the -world trip, or a months-long or years-long travels in foreign countries.
My personal favorite part of the book was the first chapter, "Getting Over Your Fears." We often come up with many excuses why we can't travel. This chapter encourages us to get over those reasons and cheers us on to do what it takes to travel and gives advice on overcoming obstacles that come up before you even go!
One compelling perspective he offers is the notion of "travelling as you live." Which brings to my mind the difference between travel and vacation. Travel evokes the sense of going somewhere, somewhere new. Whereas vacation eludes to the notion of relaxation, a break from real life. Many of us travel goal getters definitely TRAVEL because when we return home we need a VACATION to recover! Matt introduces the idea of travelling as you live because it allows you to travel longer and less expensively. This means if you don't live in a big fancy house, then why stay at a big fancy hotel when you travel? If you don't eat at expensive restaurants when you are at home then buy your food at the market on your trip like you do at home, live like a local. He advocates staying with locals to save money but also to get into the culture of the place you are visiting. He recommends websites such as couchsurfing.com to find local and low cost accommodations.
More specific recommendations are provided for the following regions: Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Central America, South America, China, India, and Japan.
His book tour has just begun and will go to 22 states and to 4 continents so check out his Book Tour schedule to see if he is coming to a major city near you.
